Bipartisan Appeal to the Super Committee – "Keep Tax Exclusion for Health Benefits"
Reps. Joe Courtney (D-CT) and Tom Cole (R-OK) are spearheading an effort to convince the members of the “Super Committee” to protect the tax exclusion for employer-subsidized health insurance, saying that any changes to the benefit would result in employers dropping or scaling back on insurance coverage for workers without a commensurate increase in wages. The letter, signed by 146 Democrats and 14 Republicans, said that capping or eliminating the tax exclusion would have disproportionately negative consequences for “our older workforce, those in high-cost regions, in high-risk fields, for women, and on small businesses.” The November 4 letter said a change in the tax code treatment of employer-provided health insurance benefits “would have little impact on reducing our federal debt.
